Act before your mind think otherwise.

Today I want to share something that I find insightful, from the learned Mel Robins. It’s so simple that we need to start applying it daily.

Arguably, this 5 Second Rule can change our life for the better.

It’s always a battle within — when we are in the midst of thinking and doing something. Hesitation may interject which in the end (most of the time) might cause us abandoning the thoughts or idea of doing something.

Simple example to ilustrate this is our intention to exercise. We know for a fact that exercising is good. The thought of doing it has always been in our mind. When we start to think to exercise, our own mind ‘interrupt’ us with all sorts of reason not to pursue such intention. Within that short window of time, our mind managed to convince us (again, most of the time) sleeping is much better (for example) instead of getting our body off the bed / couch and start exercising.

Our mind is an expert of circumventing us when it comes to doing the right thing. Sometimes, if our will power is strong, we might win. Most of the time, we submit to the decision of our mind and we lost that battle.

This is where the 5 Second Rule may assist.

The rule is not only applicable to simple matters such as above, whether we want to exercise or to sleep, but it goes beyond that. It’s a tool that we can use daily, to be productive, to be the better version of ourselves.

Let’s start calculating backwords at 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and start doing.

Thank you.
